Alberta City Annexation Request, 1934
Tuscaloosa News; January 16, 1934
On this day in 1934, four Alberta City residents presented a petition of 105 qualified voters living in Alberta City to the Tuscaloosa City Commission. The petition asked for the annexation of Alberta City into the corporate limits of Tuscaloosa. On September 21, 1948, Alberta was annexed.

Leland Shopping Center Set to Open, 1957

In late October 1957, Alberta opened the Leland Shopping Center. It employed 250 people once the building process was completed and was home to countless stores over the years.

Alberta City News, 1936

The Tuscaloosa News held a section for Alberta City news. The column could almost be considered a pre-internet form of social media. The short sentences are almost like a town gossip column. Although information about important meetings and holiday gatherings are posted, a great deal of the "news" is gossip. The column tells which citizens are having guests and where they are from, where citizens are going when they are going out of town and why, and even who had neighborly outings and where they went. This column seems almost like a Facebook newsfeed.

The Tuscaloosa News would post "Want Ads" in the newspaper. The ad listed here shows the historical context of the time by the advertiser specifying the race he wants to care for his baby. The ad also lists the pay at only $4.00 a week.

Alberta Church of Christ Sets First Service, 1958

The Alberta Church of Christ set their first service in 1958. The congregation was formed the July prior when a group decided to create a Church of Christ in Alberta City. The members began a prayer meeting service at one of their homes and attendance increased after that.

New Pizitz Opens, 1965

On this day in 1965, Alberta opened a Pizitz store across from the Leland Shopping Center. Pizitz was a department store. Nearly two decades later, Pizitz closed its doors for good.

Leland Shopping Center Advertisement, 1964

This advertisement was featured in the Tuscaloosa News in 1964. The Leland Shopping Center ran its Easter season ad in March of this year. The Leland Shopping Center was originally built in 1957 and was still thriving in Alberta City.

More Choose White Schools, 1969

All white Tuscaloosa schools integrated nearly 1,000 Negro students in 1969. No white children elected to attend all Negro schools. Alberta Elementary School would raise their total of Negro children from 10 to 158. The all-Negro East End Elementary School was court-ordered to close.
